Kumite
This discipline is the backbone of Nunchaku-do and can best be described as a combination of fencing and karate.
In kumite, two competitors armed with a safety-nunchaku and protected by headgear, try to score points by hitting each other with the nunchaku.

Extremely hard strikes on the opponent’s body are not rewarded, but punished. The participant who has obtained the most points, is the winner. The art of kumite is to hit an opponent with a clear strike, without hurting him or her.

When a competitor successfully blocks an opponent's attack, he or she may directly counter-attack without the needed two techniques. This is called a block-counter and is rewarded with an Ippon: 2 points.

A competitor is also rewarded an Ippon, when the opponent is disarmed or when the opponent drops the nunchaku. The winner is the competitor with 6 points or with the most points at the end of the time period.
